Club career

[edit]

Blackburn Rovers

[edit]

Lowe joinedBlackburn Rovers'Academy as an under-12 and had progressed to thereserve team when he signed his first professionalcontract on 4 September 2009.[8] On 8 January 2011, he made his senior debut atEwood Park in the 1–0 win overQueens Park Rangers in the first round of theFA Cup.[9] A week later, he made his first appearance in thePremier League, as a 24th-minutesubstitute for the injuredDavid Dunn in a 2–0 loss toChelsea.[10] Lowe was set to joinAberdeen onloan before the deal fell through due to injuries in the Blackburn first-team.[11]

On 24 March, he joinedOldham Athletic ofLeague One on loan until the end of the2010–11 season, to gain experience of competitive first-team football.[12] Lowe made his debut atBoundary Park four days later againstTranmere Rovers,[13] and scored his first goal for the club with apenalty in the 2–0 win againstNotts County on 3 April.[14] He was singled out for praise bymanagerPaul Dickov after the match for volunteering to take the penalty despite being a young player at a new club.[15] On 25 April, he "fired into the top corner late on" to help Oldham secure a 1–1 draw withWalsall on 25 April.[16] He finished his loan spell with two goals from seven appearances.[13]

Lowe's next appearance for Blackburn came in theLeague Cup second-round win againstSheffield Wednesday on 24 August 2011.[17] He made his first league appearance of the season, as a substitute forRubén Rochina againstFulham on 11 September,[17] and his first league start for Blackburn six days later againstArsenal.[18] After producing whatBBC Sport dubbed "a string of impressive displays", Lowe signed a five-year contract with Blackburn.[19] He continued to be a first-team regular, playing in a variety of positions; according to managerSteve Kean, "he can play right-back, holding midfield player, wide right, doubling up with a full-back, he can play box-to-box as a genuine midfield player".[19] He was twice suspended in the2011–12 season,[20] but still made 37 appearances in all competitions as Blackburn Rovers wererelegated from the Premier League.[17][21]

At the start of the2012–13 season, manager Steve Kean spoke of Lowe as one of several players in contention for a place in defence.[22] He started the openingChampionship match, away toIpswich Town, at left-back, and scored a lateown goal to give the hosts a draw.[23][24] The following week, he set up the opening goal forNuno Gomes in a 2–1 win overLeicester City.[25] He started regularly in midfield in October 2012 undercaretaker managerEric Black,[26] but ahamstring injury then kept him out for a month.[27] He was utilised at right-back byMichael Appleton in March after a series of injuries to the club's regular full-backs.[28] Against a background of continued managerial changes, Lowe established himself in Blackburn's midfield,[26][29] and finished the season with 42 appearances in all competitions.[24]

In the2013–14 season, Lowe continued as a regular in midfield, and in October he signed a contract extension to run until 2017.[30] ManagerGary Bowyer said that if Lowe wanted to make himself into "that old-fashioned midfielder that can do a bit of everything", he needed to start scoring goals.[31] Four days later, he obliged, with a "thunderous 25 yards (23 m) strike into the top corner" at home toMiddlesbrough that earned him the club's Goal of the Season award.[32][33] Speaking afterwards, he said "I don't think the phrase Jason Lowe and match-winner go together very often, so that's something that's nice to change. As soon as I hit it I knew it had a chance and when I saw it was on target and it flew in it was an unbelievable feeling.[34] After Lowe's third consecutiveman of the match performance, teammate and formerEngland international David Dunn discussed his potential in glowing terms.[35] He made his 100th appearance for the club on 3 December, in a 3–1 loss against Ipswich Town,[36] and went on to make 42 appearances in all competitions over the season.[37]

Ahead of the2014–15 season, Lowe said he was targeting more goals,[33] but Rovers' shortage of defenders through injury meant he reverted to the right-back position,[38] and then injury intervened. Astress fracture in his foot kept him out for several months,[39] and a week after his return to the side, he suffered a recurrence of the injury during a 2–0 win overCharlton Athletic on 20 December.[40] He came back into the team fully fit a month later, producing what Bowyer dubbed a terrific performance againstWigan Athletic on 17 January 2015,[41] but the injury recurred yet again in mid-February. Lowe underwent surgery that kept him out for the rest of the season.[42] Four appearances into the2015–16 season his foot let him down yet again. He had another operation.[43] Having spent six months on the sidelines, Lowe returned to action with the reserve side to regain his match fitness.[44] He returned to the first-team on 9 April in the starting eleven for a goalless draw away toWolverhampton Wanderers,[45] and started four of the remaining five matches.[26]

AfterGrant Hanley left the club, Lowe was appointedcaptain for the2016–17 season.[46] The team struggled,[47] and he himself had disciplinary issues: he received his tenthyellow card – his fifth in six appearances – on 17 December, so by the end of the year had missed three matches through suspension.[48] As the season progressed, Rovers' form dipped and they settled in the relegation zone. In the penultimate match of the season, againstAston Villa, Lowe supplied thecross forDanny Graham's winning goal; the result left survival in their own hands.[49] On the final day, Rovers won 3–1 atBrentford, but other results went against them and they were relegated to League One.[50] Lowe was one of eight players released.[51] In a farewell message, he thanked staff and supporters who had helped him "grow as a man and a player" over 13 years with the club and said that Blackburn Rovers would always have a special place in his heart.[52] During his time at the club he was named the club's first Player Ambassador by Blackburn Rovers Community Trust.[53]

Birmingham City

[edit]

Lowe signed a one-year contract with Championship clubBirmingham City on 31 August 2017.[54] He was one of six debutants in the starting eleven for Birmingham's next fixture, away toNorwich City; he played 78 minutes and was yellow-carded in the first half as his team lost 1–0.[55][56] After just two minutes of his home debut a week later atSt Andrew's, Lowe injured a hamstring – the fifth such injury sustained by Birmingham players in the first few weeks of the season.[57] Having been a last-minute squad addition by managerHarry Redknapp, he found himself frozen out under Redknapp's successorSteve Cotterill, and then only featured twice underGarry Monk.[58][59] He was released by Birmingham at the end of the2017–18 season.[60]

Bolton Wanderers

[edit]

After his release from Birmingham, Lowe became Championship clubBolton Wanderers' first signing of the 2018 summertransfer window when he signed a two-year deal on 8 June.[61][62] He made his debut for Bolton on 4 August when starting Wanderers' 2–1 victory atWest Bromwich Albion.[63] He started 35 of the club's 46 Championship games in the2018–19 campaign, picking up eleven yellow cards, as Bolton were relegated in 23rd-place.[64]

The club faced the possibility of liquidation in summer 2019 and entered the new season inadministration with a 12-point deduction; as one of a small number of experienced players left in the squad, Lowe was installed as clubcaptain.[65][66] This lasted until 17 September, whenLiam Bridcutt became captain.[67] Despite losing the captaincy under new managerKeith Hill, Lowe enjoyed an upturn in form as Bridcutt took on more defensive midfield duties to allow Lowe the freedom to roam forward and join the attack.[68] Lowe started in the centre of midfield for every game he was available until being moved to right-back towards the end of December, withPhil Parkinson stating that "he's a good midfielder but he's a better right-back".[5] On 29 December, he received the firstsending off of his career for a lunging challenge onOllie Norburn during a 1–1 draw withShrewsbury Town at theUniversity of Bolton Stadium.[69] Lowe became captain again after Bridcutt left in January 2020.[70] Lowe was one of 14 senior players released at the end of his contract following the club's relegation at the end of the2019–20 season.[71]

He scored two goals in 48 appearances throughout the2021–22 season, ending an eight-year goal drought.[77] He was named PFA Community Player of the Year for the 2021–22 season, having patronised the Derian House children's hospice.[78][79] He was released at the end of the2022–23 season, having been limited to 28 appearances and missing the play-off semi-final defeat toStockport County; he featured 125 times during his three years atMoor Lane.[80]
