Janine Elizabeth Sonis (née Beckie; born August 20, 1994) is a professionalsoccer player who plays as aforward or afull-back forNational Women's Soccer League clubRacing Louisville FC. Born in the United States, she represents theCanada national team.
Born inColorado to Canadian parents, Sonis attendedValor Christian High School inHighlands Ranch, Colorado.[2][3][4] At Valor Christian, she played for the varsity team for four years and was named 2012 Gatorade Colorado Player of the Year.[5][6]
Sonis attendedTexas Tech University, where she played for theRed Raiders from 2012 to 2015 and became the all-time leading scorer for the women's team with 57 career goals.[7] In December 2015, Sonis was named Player of the Year by Dallas Soccer News.[8]
In 2013, Sonis signed with theSeattle Sounders Women in theUSL W-League.[9]
Sonis was selected eighth overall in the2016 NWSL College Draft by theHouston Dash.[10] On February 8, 2016, it was announced that Sonis would be allocated to the team as part of theNWSL Player Allocation[11] On April 16, 2016, Sonis scored in her professional debut against the Chicago Red Stars[12]
On January 18, 2018, Sonis was traded to theSky Blue FC along withCarli Lloyd by the Dash in a three-team trade with theChicago Red Stars andSky Blue FC.[13] After making 15 appearances for Sky Blue, Sonis announced her departure from the club on August 9, 2018.[14]
Sonis' transfer fromSky Blue FC toManchester City was made official on August 9, 2018. Sonis concluded her first season with 8 goals in 15 games, and two trophies (FA League Cup,FA Cup). In the 2019–20 season, Sonis earned her first start in aUWCL game, and scored her first hat-trick in the competition.[15]
On April 14, 2020, Sonis signed a new contract with Manchester City that would last until 2022.[16]
In April 2022, it was announced that Sonis would return to the NWSL, signing a three-year contract withPortland Thorns FC.[17]
In March 2023, Sonis suffered anACL injury during a pre-season game, which forced her to miss the entirety of the2023 season.[18] She was able to return to the roster for the Thorns'2024 season opener, scoring two goals in a 4–5 away loss to theKansas City Current.[19]
On August 21, 2024,Portland Thorns FC announced that they had traded Sonis toRacing Louisville FC in exchange forReilyn Turner.[20] Upon the trade's completion, Sonis signed a two-year contract extension with Racing Louisville through the 2026 season.[21] Her first goal for Louisville came on September 14, 2024, as Sonis scored the winning goal in a 2–1 win overAngel City FC.[22][23]

Sonis has represented Canada on the under-20 and senior national teams. She made her senior international debut on November 26, 2014, replacingBrittany Baxter at half time in a 1–1 draw againstSweden.[24]
In August 2014, Sonis scored the match-winning goal against North Korea to advance the under-20 team to the knockout stage of theFIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.[4]
On February 19, 2023, Sonis made her 100th international appearance for Canada in a 2–0 win overBrazil.[25]
On March 9, 2023, Sonis spoke before theHouse of CommonsStanding Committee on Canadian Heritage alongside teammatesChristine Sinclair,Quinn andSophie Schmidt, criticizingCanada Soccer's treatment of the women's program.[26]
Sonis scored three goals in the Rio 2016 Olympics – helping the national team to defend their bronze medal effort in the 2012 London Olympics.[27][28]
On May 25, 2019, she was named to the roster for the2019 FIFA Women's World Cup.[29]
On July 21, 2021, Sonis scored two goals in Canada's 2–1 victory overChile in the2020 Summer Olympics group stage.
On August 6, 2021, Canada defeatedSweden 3–2 on penalty kicks to capture the gold medal in the2020 Summer Olympics.[30]
Sonis was called up to the Canada squad for the2022 CONCACAF W Championship.[31] Going into the tournament, she was named Canada Soccer player of the month for June 2022.[32] Sonis scored and made 2 assists in Canada's first match in the tournament.[33] Sonis started in the July 18, 2022 final against theUnited States, losing 1-0 to claim the tournament's silver medal.[34]
Sonis was called up to the Canada squad for the2024 Summer Olympics.[35]
Sonis is aChristian.[36] Her brotherDrew Beckie is also a soccer player forAtlético Ottawa. She is a co-owner ofLeague1 Ontario clubSimcoe County Rovers FC.[37]
In September 2023, she announced her engagement to Ethan Sonis.[38] They married in December 2024.[citation needed]
