Janeshwar Mishra (5 August 1933 – 22 January 2010) was a politician fromSamajwadi Party. He was a member of theParliament of India and also representedUttar Pradesh in theRajya Sabha, the upper house of theIndian Parliament. He was known asChhoteLohia (Lohia Junior) for his commitment towards socialist ideology, in reference toRam Manohar Lohia.[1]
He was born in Shubhanathahin village inBallia on 5 August 1933.[2][3] He was B.A. and LL.B.[4] He was president of the student union of Purna nand Inter College and attendedAllahabad University as well. While still a student, he joined the Samajwadi Yuvajan Sabha and met DrRam Manohar Lohia andRaj Narain.[2]
He represented the PrayagrajLok Sabha constituency three times.[3] He first became the member of Lok Sabha by defeating K D Malviya, the sitting Petroleum Minister inIndira Gandhi Cabinet fromPhulpur constituency inPrayagraj district in 1969–70.[3] Subsequently, he defeated V.P.Singh by almost 90,000 votes fromPrayagraj Lok Sabha constituency in 1977 elections.[5] He served as a Member of Sixth Lok Sabha, 1977–80, and as Member of Ninth Lok Sabha, 1989–91.[4]
He served in the governments ofMorarji Desai,Chaudhary Charan Singh,V P Singh,Chandrashekhar,H D Deve Gowda andI K Gujral.[3][6] He served as union minister of state from 1977. He also held portfolios of Petroleum, Water Resources Chemicals and Fertilisers, Energy, Shipping and Transport, and Communication and Railways.[6] He served as the minister of state for Railways in theChandra Shekhar government during 1990–91.[1] He was Railways Minister in the Chandra Shekhar government in 1990–91.[6]
He was elected toRajya Sabha in 1996.[3] He was re-elected toRajya Sabha in 2000[7] and 2006.[4]
He died due tocardiac arrest on 22 January 2010 at Tej Bahadur Sapru Hospital in Allahabad.[2][8] At the time of death, he was theSamajwadi Party's vice president and member of theRajya Sabha.[1] He is survived by two daughters, one of them being Mina Tiwari.[6][9]
FormerChief Minister of Uttar Pradesh,Akhilesh Yadav credits Janeshwar Mishra with initiating him into politics.[10]
