Janes is a globalopen-source intelligence company specialising inmilitary,national security,aerospace and transport topics, whose name derives from British authorFred T. Jane.
Jane's Information Group was founded in 1898 byFred T. Jane, who had begun sketching ships as an enthusiast naval artist while living inPortsmouth. This gradually developed into an encyclopedic knowledge, culminating in the publishing ofAll the World's Fighting Ships (1898).[1] The company then gradually branched out into other areas of military expertise. The books andtrade magazines published by the company are often considered thede facto public source of information on warfare and transportation systems.
Based inGreater London for most of its existence, the group was owned by theThomson Corporation,the Woodbridge Company,[2] thenIHS Markit,[3] before being acquired byMontagu Private Equity in 2019.[4]
In March 2022, Janes acquired Washington, D.C.-based RWR Advisory Group.[5]
The company name is officially Jane's Information Group,[6][7] and it is as of 2023[update] located inCroydon.[8] The company continues to provideopen-source intelligence in the defence, security, aerospace and transport sectors.[9]
Of their publications, books (published annually[10]) includeJane's All the World's Aircraft,Jane's Fighting Ships,Jane's Military Communications,[11]Jane's World Air Forces,[12]Jane's World Navies,[12] andJane's World Railways. Jane'sAll the World's Aircraft andFighting Ships are included in the 2019 edition of theAP stylebook as references for proper notation of aircraft and military ship names.[13]
Jane's Combat Simulations was a brand ofcomputer flight simulation games and naval warfare simulations produced between 1996 and 2000 under license toElectronic Arts.[14]
