James Scott (1895 – 1 July 1916) was a Scottish professionalfootballer who played as aforward in theScottish League forRaith Rovers.[3] He scored on his only appearance forScotland in awartime international in 1916, during theFirst World War.[4] He was described as "an all-round forward" and "the most consistent goalscorer Raith have ever had".[3]
Scott was born inAirdrie to James Scott and Annabella Bennett.[5] He attendedAirdrie Academy and later became anapprenticewire rope maker with the Caledonian Wire Rope Company.[6] On 4 April 1915, Scott married Catherine Reekie and they had one child, James.[7] Scott served as aprivate inMcCrae's Battalion of theRoyal Scots during theFirst World War.[3] On thefirst day of the Somme, he was hit in the stomach and neck bymachine gun fire andkilled during an attack onOvillers-la-Boisselle.[2][6][8] Scott is commemorated on theThiepval Memorial.[1]
