Jalpaiguri division is one of the 7divisions in theIndianstate ofWest Bengal. It is the northernmost division ofWest Bengal. It is surrounded byNepal to the west,Bihar on the south-western side,Bhutan to the north andBangladesh to the south.[3]

Hindus forms the majority of the population whileMuslims forms the largest minority group. There is a significantChristian andBuddhist population in the division. They are mainly concentrated inKalimpong district and hill subdivisions ofDarjeeling district. The Dooars regions also has a significant tribal population.[7]
Bengali is the predominant language of the region, spoken by 72.2% of the population, followed by Nepali, Rajbanshi, Sadri, Kurukh, and Hindi. Bengali speakers form the majority in the districts ofJalpaiguri,Cooch Behar, andAlipurduar, While Nepali speakers are significant inDarjeeling, but don't form a majority, and inKalimpong, forms the largest group.[8]
