Jalal Donnell Leach (born March 14, 1969), is an American former professionalbaseballoutfielder who played for theSan Francisco Giants ofMajor League Baseball in2001. He was primarily used as apinch hitter by the Giants. He threw and battedleft-handed, stood 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 m) tall and weighed 200 pounds (91 kg) during his professional career, which lasted for 15 seasons (1990–2004).
Born inSan Francisco, Leach attendedSan Marin High School inNovato, California. He enrolled atPepperdine University and playedcollege baseball for thePepperdine Waves.[1] In 1989, he playedcollegiate summer baseball with theWareham Gatemen of theCape Cod Baseball League and was named a league all-star.[2][3]
TheNew York Yankees selected Leach in the seventh round of the1990 Major League Baseball Draft.[4] Before the 1998 season, theSan Francisco Giants acquired Leach and Scott Smith from theSeattle Mariners forDavid McCarty.[5]
In 12plate appearances during his September 2001 trial with the Giants, he collected twobases on balls and onehit, asingle offOctavio Dotel of theHouston Astros on September 19.[6]
After his playing career, Leach became ascout, working for the Yankees.[7] He returned to the Giants in that role for the2016 season.
