Jakob Ebert (26 January 1549 – 5 February 1614) was a Germantheologian andpoet.
Born inSprottau, Ebert was the son ofAndreas Ebertus [de]. He was school director inSoldin,Schwiebus andGrünberg. From 1594 he was on the faculty of the universityAlma Mater Viadrina [de] inFrankfurt (Oder), teachingtheology.
Ebert was the author of thehymn "Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ", which appeared in 1601 with a melody byBartholomäus Gesius. Composers using this hymn includedDietrich Buxtehude (BuxW 20 and 21) andJohann Sebastian Bach, who based achorale cantata on it,Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ, BWV 116, and used it in several other cantatas.
