Jagat Prakash Nadda (born 2 December 1960) is an Indian lawyer and politician who is serving as the 34thMinister of Health, 25thMinister of Chemicals and Fertilizers since 2024 and 11thnational president of theBharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since 2020 and the member of theRajya Sabha representingGujarat since 2024. A key decision maker of the BJP, he is a close aide toNarendra Modi.[1] He was the BJP's national working president from 2019 to 2020.[2][3] Nadda was also theMinister of Health and Family Welfare in the first Modi ministry from 2014 to 2019 and Parliamentary Board Secretary ofBharatiya Janata Party.[4][5]
Previously, he was an MLA fromBilaspur, Himachal Pradesh from 2007 to 2012 and from 1993 to 2003 and Minister of Forest, Environment, Science, and Technology from 2007 to 2012 and the Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Parliamentary Affairs from 1998 to 2003 in theHimachal Pradesh Government.[6]
Nadda was born on 2 December 1960 inPatna,Bihar in the family of Narain Lall Nadda and Krishna Nadda, with roots inHimachal Pradesh.[7][8][9] He belongs toBrahmin community.[10][11] He has a brother named Jagat Bhushan Nadda.[12]
Nadda was educated atSt. Xavier's School, Patna. Thereafter he did hisB.A. fromPatna College,Patna University andLL.B. fromFaculty of Law, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. As a child, he representedBihar in the All India Junior Swimming Championship held at Delhi.
Nadda married Mallika Nadda (née Banerjee) on 11 December 1991, with whom he has two sons.[9] His mother-in-lawJayashree Banerjee was elected to Lok Sabha in 1999.[13][14]

Nadda was first elected to theHimachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly in theelection of 1993 fromBilaspur. He wasre-elected in 1998.
During his first term, he served as the Leader of his party group in the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly from 1994 to 1998. He was the Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Parliamentary Affairs inFirst Dhumal ministry.[15] Nadda lost his seat in the2003 Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly election.
Nadda was elected for another term in the2007 elections. AfterPrem Kumar Dhumal formed a government, he inducted Nadda into his cabinet, as a cabinet minister responsible for Forest, Environment, Science and Technology, from 2008 to 2010.[15]
Nadda did not seek re-election to the Legislative Assembly in 2012, and instead got elected toRajya Sabha,Indian Parliament'supper chamber from Himachal Pradesh.[15]
Sanjiv Chaturvedi was posted inAIIMS, Delhi as Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) from 2012 to 2014. During his tenure, he was investigating some high-level corruption in the prime institute.[16] As a result of Chaturvedi's investigations, the CBI registered cases and recommended action against Vineet Chawdhry, a close aide to Nadda.[17] In 2014, Nadda wrote multiple letters to the then Union Health Minister, Dr Harsh Vardhan, to put the investigations on hold and to remove Chaturvedi from the post of CVO.[17][18]
In November 2014,during a cabinet reshuffle, Prime MinisterNarendra Modi made Nadda theMinister of Health.[19] The reshuffle move was described by a section of media as surprising and something which raised questions on Modi's stance on corruption.[20] On 25 February 2015, theDelhi High Court issued a notice to Nadda questioning his role in corruption cases at AIIMS.[17] He was frontrunner for BJP Himachal's Chief Minister but his rivalJai Ram Thakur won the post.[21]
According to a June 2017India Today investigative report, Nadda was found to have suppressed an investigation of what the report called a ₹7,000 crore scam. TheIndia Today reports included reports from the CBI and a parliamentary committee.[22]

Nadda was appointed the national working president of the BJP in June 2019. On 20 January 2020, he was elected unanimously as the BJP National President, a role he took fromAmit Shah.[23]
In January 2021 inBardhaman,West Bengal, Nadda started a new schemeEk Muthi Chaawal Yojana.[24] In September 2022 he got extension to be the party chief till 2024 Lok Sabha polls.[25]
On 4 March 2024, he resigned as member of Rajya Sabha from Himachal Pradesh.[26] He was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha fromGujarat[27] and took oath on 6 April 2024.[28]
On 11 June 2024, Nadda took the dual-charge ofMinistry of Health and Family Welfare as well asMinistry of Chemicals and Fertilizers.[29]
He was born on 2nd December, 1960 in a Brahmin family to Dr. Narain Lall Nadda and Shrimati Krishna Nadda.
