Jacob Tremblay (/ˈtrɒmbl/TROM-blay; born October 5, 2006)[1] is a Canadian actor. He became known for his role as a child born in captivity inRoom (2015), for which he won theCritics' Choice Movie Award for Best Young Performer and became the youngest nominee for theScreen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role.

Tremblay subsequently starred as a child withTreacher Collins syndrome in the dramaWonder (2017) and a naive sixth grader in the comedyGood Boys (2019). He has since taken on voice roles asDamian Wayne / Robin inHarley Quinn (2019), the title characters inLuca (2021) andOrion and the Dark (2024), which earned him anEmmy award, andFlounder inThe Little Mermaid (2023).

Early life

Tremblay, the middle of three children, was born on October 5, 2006, inVancouver,British Columbia.[2][3] His father is a police detective. Tremblay's sisters are actresses Erica andEmma Tremblay.[4] His maternal grandfather is Chilean.[5]

Career

Tremblay began acting in television roles. He made his film debut inThe Smurfs 2,[6] released in 2013.[7]

Tremblay portrayed Jack Newsome in the critically acclaimed drama filmRoom, co-starring withBrie Larson.[8] The film, directed byLenny Abrahamson, premiered on September 4, 2015, at theTelluride Film Festival, and was released in cinemas on October 16, 2015.[9] For his performance, he was nominated for the 2015Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role, becoming the youngest actor nominated for that award and the second-youngest in all categories.[citation needed]

In 2016, Tremblay played a supporting role in the comedy filmDonald Trump's The Art of the Deal: The Movie; and guest-starred as the younger version of the main character, Phil Miller, onFox's post-apocalyptic comedy seriesThe Last Man on Earth.[10] That same year, he starred in the horror filmBefore I Wake, withKate Bosworth andThomas Jane,[11] and played a supporting role in the psychological thrillerShut In, alongsideNaomi Watts, and co-starringOliver Platt,[12] and directed byFarren Blackburn.[13] He also portrayed Wes Firth in the adventure comedy-dramaBurn Your Maps, starring withVera Farmiga andMarton Csokas.[14]

In 2017, Tremblay played Peter Carpenter in directorColin Trevorrow's drama filmThe Book of Henry, co-starring with Naomi Watts andMaddie Ziegler.[15] He also starred as August Pullman, a child withTreacher Collins syndrome, inWonder, based on R.J. Palacio'snovel of the same name. The latter film proved to be his most successful, earning over $285 million against a $20 million budget.[16][17] In 2019, Tremblay made his comedy debut by headlining the R-rated comedyGood Boys co-starring withBrady Noon and Keith L. Williams.Good Boys earned $21 million during its opening weekend, becoming the first R-rated comedy sinceThe Boss, which was released in April 2016, to finish first at the box office.

Tremblay brought his fellow actors to tears with his cameo performance inDoctor Sleep, the 2019 sequel toThe Shining,[18] as a kidnapped boy who is tortured to death in a scene which directorMike Flanagan initially feared would be too traumatic to include in the final cut.[19] Commenting on the performance, Flanagan said, "he's one of the best actors I’ve ever worked with in my entire life."[20]

In July 2019, it was announced that he would be voicingFlounder in thelive-action adaptation of Disney'sThe Little Mermaid, directed byRob Marshall.[21][22] Tremblay voicesRobin in theDC Universe adult animation seriesHarley Quinn.[23] On October 16, 2020, he was featured in the video forJustin Bieber's track "Lonely" withrecord producerBenny Blanco.[24]

Tremblay provided the voice of thetitular character in thePixar filmLuca, released in 2021.[citation needed]

Personal life

Tremblay resides inLangley, British Columbia with his family.[25] A fan of theStar Wars franchise, he named his dog afterDaisy Ridley's character,Rey.[26] His excitement at the charactersC-3PO,R2-D2, andBB-8's appearance at the88th Academy Awards ceremony was considered a highlight of the evening.[27][28][29]
