Jacob Fearnley (born 15 July 2001) is a British professionaltennis player. He has a career-highATP singles ranking of world No. 77 achieved on 27 January 2025. He also has a career-high doubles ranking of No. 238 achieved on 20 May 2024.[1][2] He is the current British No. 3 in singles.[3]

College career

Fearnley played college tennis for coachDavid Roditi atTexas Christian University inFort Worth, Texas.[4] At TCU, he earned All-Big 12 andAll-America honors all four years, leading theHorned Frogs to back-to-backITA Indoor National Championships in 2022 and 2023 and the school's firstNCAA Division I men's tennis championship in 2024.[5]

Professional career

2023: Major debut in doubles

He won his maiden ATPChallenger doubles title at the2023 Nottingham Open withJohannus Monday.[6] The pair received wildcards in doubles for the2023 Wimbledon Championships.[7]

2024: Maiden Challenger title, ATP, Major and top 100 debuts

He won his first singles ATPChallenger title at the2024 Nottingham Open as a qualifier, getting his first top-100 win againstShang Juncheng in the quarterfinals, and defeating compatriotCharles Broom in the final.[8][9] It was only Fearnley's second appearance in the main draw of an ATP Challenger event. He became the fourth Brit to win the trophy after Andy Murray (2023), Dan Evans (2019 & 2022) and Greg Rusedski (1997 & 2003).[10]

Ranked No. 270, he made his ATP debut at the2024 Eastbourne International as a wildcard.[11] He lost to compatriot and fellow wildcardBilly Harris.[12][13]

For his Grand Slam singles debut, he also received a wildcard for the2024 Wimbledon Championships.[14][15] He recorded his first Major win over debutantAlejandro Moro Canas and moved 50 positions up into the top 225 in the rankings.[2][16] In the second round, he took a set off the second seedNovak Djokovic before losing by three sets to one.[17]

Following a final showing at the2024 Lincoln Challenger, where he defeated the top seedChristopher Eubanks en route, he reached the top 200 in the rankings on 12 August 2024.[2] Fearnley beatColeman Wong in straight sets in the final to win his second ATP Challenger title.[18][19] As a result he moved up to a new career-high ranking of No. 160 on 19 August 2024.[2]

Following his third title at the Rennes Challenger, defeating five French players in a row,Benoît Paire in 37 minutes,[20] wildcardSascha Gueymard Wayenburg, wildcard and top seedAdrian Mannarino, his first Top 50 win,[21] third seedHarold Mayot,[22] and finally fourth seedQuentin Halys,[23] he reached the top 130 in the rankings on 16 September 2024.[2][24] After winning his fourth Challenger at theOpen d'Orléans he reached the top 100 in the rankings.[25][26][27][28]

Having qualified for theStockholm Open in October,[29] Fearnley won his 13th match in a row and second at the ATP Tour level with a first round success againstCorentin Moutet.[30] He lost in the second round to seventh seedTallon Griekspoor.[31]

On 2 December 2024, Fearnley was world No. 99, having started the season at No. 646, climbing 547 positions and setting a record in the ATP singles rankings for the year.[32]

2025: Australian Open third round, Davis Cup debut

For the first time in his career, Fearnley gained direct admission into a Grand Slam tournament main draw, entering theAustralian Open with his ranking of 99 after the withdrawal ofSebastian Ofner.[33] Wins overNick Kyrgios[34][35] andArthur Cazaux saw him reach the third round,[36] where his run was ended by second seedAlexander Zverev.[37]

Fearnley made his debut for theGreat Britain Davis Cup Team in theirqualifier againstJapan, defeatingKei Nishikori.[38] He then lost toYoshihito Nishioka as Japan won the tie 3-2.[39]

In March, Fearnley made his firstATP Masters 1000 main draw appearance atIndian Wells, but lost in the opening round toJoão Fonseca in three sets.[40][41] He followed this up by qualifying for theMiami Open,[42] where he defeatedBenjamin Bonzi in the first round.[43] Fearnley lost in the second round to top seed Alexander Zverev in a repeat of their match from the Australian Open earlier in the year.[44]
