J. Miles Dale(born 1961)[1] is a Canadian producer and director of film and television.[2] He is best known for producing the critically acclaimed filmThe Shape of Water, which won theAcademy Award for Best Picture at the90th Academy Awards ceremony.[3][4] Dale is a regular collaborator of fellow directorGuillermo del Toro and formed a creative partnership withNetflix.[5]
Dale was born inToronto, Ontario, to British-born Canadian jazz musicianJimmy Dale.[6][7] Dale attendedBayview Glen School from 1965 to 1968. In 1968, his father moved the family to Hollywood where he worked as a music director forThe Smothers Brothers Show,The Andy Williams Show andThe Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour. The family returned toToronto in the mid-1970s, and Miles graduated fromJarvis Collegiate Institute. He attended theUniversity of Toronto for a year and later transferred to theUniversity of British Columbia before dropping out to join the film industry.[6][1]
