John Joseph Wilkes,FSA, FBA (born 12 July 1936) is a British archaeologist and academic. He isEmeritusYates Professor of Greek and Roman Archaeology atUniversity College London.

Early life and education

Wilkes was born on 12 July 1936 inReigate,Surrey, England.[1][2] He was educated atKing Henry VIII School, Coventry, then an all-boysprivate school inCoventry, and atHarrow County School for Boys, an all-boysstategrammar school inHarrow, London.[1] He studied Ancient History and Archaeology atUniversity College London, graduating with aBachelor of Arts (BA) degree. He went on to study atSt Cuthbert's Society,Durham University, from which he received hisDoctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree.[1][3]

Academic career

From 1961 to 1963, Wilkes was aresearch fellow at theUniversity of Birmingham. He moved to theUniversity of Manchester where he was anassistant lecturer in history and archaeology from 1963 to 1964.[2] He then returned the University of Birmingham as Lecturer in Roman History and Archaeology.[4] He was promoted tosenior lecturer in 1971.[2]

In 1974, he returned toUniversity College London where he had studied for hisundergraduate degree. He joined theInstitute of Archaeology as Professor of the Archaeology of the Roman Provinces.[2] In 1992, he was appointedYates Professor of Greek and Roman Archaeology. He retired from the university in 2001.[4] He is currentlyEmeritus Yates Professor of Greek and Roman Archaeology at the university.[5]

In addition to his university lecturing and research, he has held a number of external positions. He was Chairman of the Faculty of Archaeology, History and Letters at theBritish School at Rome between 1979 and 1983. He was editor of theacademic journalBritannia from 1980 to 1984.[3] From 1982 to 1985, he served as president of theLondon and Middlesex Archaeological Society.

Honours

Wilkes was electedFellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (FSA) on 9 January 1969.[7] He was electedFellow of the British Academy (FBA) in 1986.[4] He is an Honorary Vice-President of theSociety for the Promotion of Roman Studies,[3][8] and Honorary President of the Association for Roman Archaeology.[3]
