Nagulapati Srinivasa Chakravarthy, known professionally asJ. D. Chakravarthy, is an Indian actor, filmmaker, screenwriter and musician known for his work primarily withTelugu cinema in addition toHindi,Tamil, andMalayalam films.[1][2][3] Chakravarthy made his screen debut with the Telugu film,Siva, an actionblockbuster directed byRam Gopal Varma, featured at the12th IFFI.[4] He subsequently made his Bollywood debut with the remake of the same film titledShiva (1990). He then starred in theblockbusterSatya, featured in the Indian panorama section at the29th IFFI, and was listed amongCNN-IBN's 100 greatestIndian films of all time.[5][6]
Chakravarthy starred in more than seventy feature films in a variety of roles predominantly inTelugu,Hindi and a fewTamil, andMalayalam films. He is best known for his performances in box office hits likeNeti Siddhartha (1990),Money (1993),One by Two (1993),Money Money (1994),Gulabi (1995),Bombay Priyudu (1996),Anaganaga Oka Roju (1997),Egire Paavurama (1997),Nenu Premisthunnanu (1997),Premaku Velayara (1999),Pape Naa Pranam (2000),Madhyanam Hathya (2004), andDayaa (2023).[7][8][9] He won theNandi Special Jury Award,Screen Award Special Jury Award and Best Supporting Actor Award at theEko International Film Festival forGulabi (1995),Satya, (1998), andDahini: The Witch (2022) respectively.[10][2][3]
Chakravarthy was born into aTelugu speaking family ofcarnatic singer Prof. Dr. Kovela Shantha, and father Nagulapati Suryanarayana Rao. He was born inHyderabad, India. His elder sister Vijayanthi is settled in theUnited States.[11][12] He did his schooling inSt. George's Grammar School (Hyderabad), and completedB. E. fromChaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology.[13][14]
He debuted in 1989 throughRam Gopal Verma's debutTelugu film,Siva as J.D., as one of the student leaders, and in the same year appeared in a supporting role in theMalayalam filmEnnodu Ishtam Koodamo before devoting all his time to films under his mentor'sRam Gopal Varma 's production.
He has worked in many Telugu films directed by ace film makers of the time likeMani Ratnam,Krishna Vamsi,S. V. Krishna Reddy,K. Raghavendra Rao,Kodi Ramakrishna,E. V. V. Satyanarayana,Siva Nageswara Rao,Gunasekhar, andVamsy.[15][16] His firstHindi film in a lead role,Satya, was critically acclaimed and became a commercialblockbuster.[17] In 2002, he played a role of Sri LankanTamil Eelam fighterDileepan, inMani Ratnam'sTamil film,Kannathil Muthamittal.
He also starred inHindi films likeVaastu Shastra, andAag alongsideSushmita Sen, andBhoot Returns alongsideManisha Koirala. He made his film directing debut, withDarwaaza Bandh Rakho and anthology filmDarna Zaroori Hai got archived at theNew York Institute of Technology, New York, America as part of the film course[18][19]
He has returned to Telugu film industry withHomam as a director and actor in the year 2008.[20] He then went on to directSiddham.[19] He had a role in directorVishnuvardhan's Tamil filmSarvam, starringArya andTrisha.[3] In 2016, he has appeared in the Malayalam filmBhaskar the Rascal pairing withNayanthara also starringMammootty. Then he played a young army officer in another Malayalam filmShikhamani, and made his Kannada film debut with the unreleasedRaavani alongsidePooja Gandhi.[21][22]
