Isometheptene (usually asisometheptenemucate) is asympathomimetic amine sometimes used in the treatment ofmigraines and tension headaches due to itsvasoconstricting properties; that is, it causesconstriction (narrowing) ofblood vessels (arteries andveins).[1][2] Along withparacetamol anddichloralphenazone, it is one of the constituents ofAmidrine.
Isometheptene is amonounsaturatedaliphaticsecondary amine.
Isometheptene's vasoconstricting properties arise through activation of thesympathetic nervous system viaepinephrine andnorepinephrine. These compounds elicitsmooth muscle activation leading to vasoconstriction by interacting with cell surfaceadrenergic receptors.[3]
