Isla de la Plata is a small island off the coast ofManabí,Ecuador, and is part ofParque Nacional Machalilla. Guided tours of the island are given on a couple of different hiking trails. It can be reached by boat from the city ofPuerto López, which is 40 km away.[1]

History

There is a shrine fromInca times located on the island.[2]

Environment

On the island, there is a large diversity of animal species,[3][4] including theblue-footed booby,red-footed booby, and theNazca booby.[5][6] Another species found here is theSouth American sea lion.[7]

Important Bird Area

The island has been designated anImportant Bird Area (IBA) byBirdLife International because it supports significant populations of residentEsmeraldas woodstars,magnificent frigatebirds andblue-footed boobies, breedingwaved albatrosses, andwandering tattlers onpassage.[8]
