Island of Manabí Province, Ecuador
Isla de la Plata is a small island off the coast ofManabí ,Ecuador , and is part ofParque Nacional Machalilla . Guided tours of the island are given on a couple of different hiking trails. It can be reached by boat from the city ofPuerto López , which is 40 km away.[ 1]
There is a shrine fromInca times located on the island.[ 2]
On the island, there is a large diversity of animal species,[ 3] [ 4] including theblue-footed booby ,red-footed booby , and theNazca booby .[ 5] [ 6] Another species found here is theSouth American sea lion .[ 7]
Important Bird Area [ edit ] The island has been designated anImportant Bird Area (IBA) byBirdLife International because it supports significant populations of residentEsmeraldas woodstars ,magnificent frigatebirds andblue-footed boobies , breedingwaved albatrosses , andwandering tattlers onpassage .[ 8]
