Isabel Mackensen-Geis (born 29 September 1986 asIsabel Mackensen) is a German politician of theSocial Democratic Party (SPD) and member of theBundestag, the German parliament, since 2019.

Early life and education

Mackensen-Geis was born inSchwetzingen and grew up inNiederkirchen bei Deidesheim (where she still has her home).[1] After passing herAbitur in 2006 at theKurfürst-Ruprecht-Gymnasium (secondary school) inNeustadt an der Weinstraße, she studiedpolitical science andhistory at theUniversity of Trier, graduating with an MA in 2012.[2]

Political career

Mackensen-Geis became an SPD member in 2009[2] and was chair of the Palatinate regional section of theYoung Socialists in the SPD from 2013 to 2017.[3] In 2019, she was elected a member of the district council ofBad Dürkheim.[4]

In the2017 German federal election, Mackensen was the SPD candidate for theNeustadt – Speyer district and came second with 25.3% of the vote.[5] Mackensen became aBundestag member via her party list afterKatarina Barley, having been elected to theEuropean Parliament, resigned her seat in the German parliament.[1] She served on the Committee on Food and Agriculture and was re-elected via the SPD-list in the2021 German federal election.

Within her parliamentary group, Mackensen-Geis belongs to theParliamentary Left, a left-wing movement.[6]

In the negotiations to form a so-calledtraffic light coalition of the SPD, theGreen Party and theFree Democratic Party (FDP) following the2021 federal elections, Mackensen-Geis was part of her party's delegation in the working group onenvironmental policy, co-chaired byRita Schwarzelühr-Sutter,Steffi Lemke andStefan Birkner.[7]
