Ira Hough[pronunciation?] (July 2, 1842 – October 18, 1916) was aUnion Army soldier during theAmerican Civil War. He received theMedal of Honor for gallantry when he captured an enemy flag during theBattle of Cedar Creek fought nearMiddletown, Virginia on October 19, 1864. The battle was the decisive engagement ofMajor GeneralPhilip Sheridan'sValley Campaigns of 1864 and was the largest battle fought in theShenandoah Valley.
Hough joined the army fromMiddletown, Indiana in May 1864, and was discharged in August 1865.[1]
The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private Ira Hough, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 19 October 1864, while serving with Company E, 8th Indiana Infantry, in action at Cedar Creek, Virginia, for capture of flag.
