Baseball competition held in 1968
This article is about the tournament held in Mexico City in 1968. For the international competition held from 1938 to 2011 alternatively known as the "Amateur World Series", seeBaseball World Cup.

TheInternational Amateur Baseball Tournament was held inMexico City in 1968 between four different national baseball teams.[1][2] The tournament occurred shortly after the1968 Olympic Games, also in Mexico City, though it was not consideredpart of the Olympic program. It was billed as the first edition of the tournament, but the format was not continued; future international amateur tournaments, including the following yearin Santo Domingo, would continue to bill themselves as theAmateur World Series.

The championUnited States team was coached by veteran college coachDanny Litwhiler.[3] It lost only one game, in a ten-inningshutout toMexico.[4][5] The U.S. team included several futuremajor leaguers, namelyBrent Strom,Larry Gura,Lenny Randle, andSteve Rogers. Other future major leaguers included Puerto Rico'sMiguel Fuentes.[6]
