Intermontane is a physiographic adjectiveformed from the prefix "inter-" (signifying among, between, amid, during, within, mutual, reciprocal) and the adjective "montane" (inhabiting, or growing inmountainousregions, especially cool, moistupland slopes below thetimberline).

The correspondingphysiographic noun isintermountain, while the nounintermontane is anecologic noun meaningamong, between, amid, or within "flora and fauna of a montanehabitat." As an example, analpine region would be an intermontane for a species that migrates between aglacial region and asubalpine region.[specify]
