Established under section 110B of the Defence Act 1903, theInspector-General of the Australian Defence Force (IGADF) is a statutory office in the AustralianDepartment of Defence with a range of roles relating to military justice in theAustralian Defence Force (ADF). The office holder is appointed by theMinister for Defence and is independent of the ADFchain-of-command.
As of November 2024[update], the office-holder isJames Gaynor, who has held office since 1 December 2016.[1]
The IGADF was responsible for conducting theinquiry chaired by Major GeneralPaul Brereton into possible breaches of thelaw of armed conflict by ADF personnel in theWar in Afghanistan. TheBrereton Report was released in November 2020.[2]
