Life and career

[edit]

Born in Berlin,[1] Haubold first studied church music at theMusikhochschule Detmold.[1] She then studied voice withAnnelies Kupper at theMusikhochschule München.[1] She was a scholarship holder of theDeutscher Bühnenverein.[2] She became a member of the opera studio of theBavarian State Opera, and also appeared at theTheater am Gärtnerplatz in the 1965/66 season. She was a member of the ensemble of theLandestheater Detmold from 1970, and of theStädtische Bühnen Bielefeld from 1972. After a break due to illness in 1978, she continued her career as a member of theLübeck Opera in 1979, and had guest contracts with theStaatsoper Hannover and theBadisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe from 1981.[1]

Haubold performed on leading international stages beginning in 1986. She appeared as Isolde in Wagner'sTristan und Isolde at theTeatro Real in Madrid that year, and appeared at theBayreuth Festival as Ortlinde inDie Walküre in 1986 and 1988.[3] She was Isolde again at theDeutsche Oper Berlin in 1988, performed at theTeatro Regio the same year. In 1989, she appeared in the title role ofAriadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss at theSchwetzingen Festival, and at theLucerne Festival.[1] In 1990, she was a guest at theMetropolitan Opera in New York City in the title role of Beethoven'sFidelio.[1] The same year, she performed as Brünnhilde in Wagner'sDer Ring des Nibelungen at theTheater Saarbrücken, and as Senta inDer fliegende Holländer at theSavonlinna Opera Festival.[1] She appeared at theVienna State Opera in the 1990s, including as Isolde and as the Empress inDie Frau ohne Schatten by Richard Strauss.[1][4] She performed the role of Rezia in Weber'sOberon at theTheater St. Gallen in 1993, was Brünnhilde inSiegfried at theWiesbaden May Festival in 1996, and performed the title role ofElektra by Richard Strauss at theUlm Opera in 1998. She appeared at theTeatro Massimo in Palermo, theTeatro Comunale Bologna, and theAntwerp Opera, among others,[1] and at festivals such as the Richard Wagner Festival inWels.[2]

In concert, she sang recitals including contemporary music. She was a soloist in the 1990 premiere ofWolfgang Rihm's Requiem for soprano and orchestra,Mein Tod. Requiem in memoriamJane S.,[5] at theSalzburg Festival,[1] withMichael Gielen conducting theORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien.[5]

Haubold recorded scenes from the first act ofDie Walküre withRené Kollo as Siegmund, conducted byChristian Thielemann in 1992.[6] In 1993, she recorded Senta inDer fliegende Holländer withAlfred Muff in the title role, conducted byPinchas Steinberg.[7]Alan Blyth wrote forGramophone that she was a "discovery":

Here is a lyric-dramatic soprano who has just the steadiness and strength to encompass Senta's music and, as important, the histrionic power to convey most of the girl's obsession. As with the rest of the performance there is refreshing directness to her reading quite free of artifice or prima-donna pretensions, and she rises with only an occasional sense of not entirely inappropriate strain to the climaxes of the love duet and to the final moments of the opera as a whole. Her voice has a certain raw edge to it that may put off some but seems apt in this part.[8]

Haubold has been professor for singing at theUniversity of Music Karlsruhe.[9] Among her students was the bass Doğuş Güney who studied with her from 2013 to 2015.[10] She was married to the Finnish bassHeikki Toivanen [de] until his death in 2006.[1][11]
