Indicaxanthin is a type ofbetaxanthin, a plant pigment present inbeets, inMirabilis jalapa flowers,[1] in cacti such as prickly pears (Opuntia sp.) or the red dragonfruit (Hylocereus costaricensis). It is a powerfulantioxidant.
It has been shown in aspectrophotometric study for patients withthalassemia, that indicaxanthin can reduceperferryl-Hb generated in solution frommet-Hb andhydrogen peroxide, more effectively than eithertrolox (avitamin E derivative) orvitamin C, possibly interfering with perferryl-Hb, a reactive intermediate in thehydroperoxide-dependent Hb degradation.[2]
Indicaxanthin in antioxidant studies was more effective thanTrolox at scavenging theABTS cation radical.[3]
