TheIndian National Congress (U) was a breakaway fraction of theIndira Gandhi-ledCongress (I), formed in July 1979 byD. Devaraj Urs, the thenChief Minister of Karnataka. Urs' explanation of the split was the return of Indira's sonSanjay Gandhi into the party fold.[citation needed] Urs took with him many legislators fromKarnataka,Kerala,Maharashtra andGoa including futureUnion Ministers andChief Ministers,Yashwantrao Chavan,Dev Kant Baruah,Kasu Brahmananda Reddy,A.K. Antony,Sharad Pawar,Sarat Chandra Sinha,Priyaranjan Das Munshi andK. P. Unnikrishnan.
Subsequently, D. Devaraj Urs joinedJanata Party; Yashwantrao Chavan, Brahmananda Reddy, and Chidambaram Subramaniam joinedCongress (Indira); andA. K. Antony split from Congress (U) to formCongress (A) inKerala. When Sharad Pawar took over the party presidency in October 1981, the name of the party was changed toIndian Congress (Socialist).[2]
