iPadOS 17 is thefifth major release of theiPadOSoperating system developed byApple for itsiPad line oftablet computers. The successor toiPadOS 16, it was announced at the company'sWorldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 5, 2023 and was released on September 18, 2023 along withiOS 17.

iPadOS 17 drops support for thefirst-generation iPad Pro, and thefifth-generation iPad, making it the first version of iPadOS to requireApple Pencil compatibility oniPads, as well as the first version of iPadOS to drop support for aniPad Pro.

The first public beta was released on July 12, 2023 and the final version was released on September 18, 2023.

iPadOS 17 is the final version of iPadOS that supports thesecond-generation iPad Pro and aniPad with the original 9.7-inch display, thesixth-generation iPad.

iPadOS 17 requires iPads with anA10 FusionSoC or later. It drops support for iPads with anA9[a] andA9X[b] SoC, officially marking the end of support for iPads without Apple Pencil support.[2] iPadOS 17 is the first version of iPadOS to drop support for an iPad with the 12.9-inch display and Apple Pencil compatibility. This also marks the third time Apple has dropped support for 64-bit iPads. The iPad (6th generation) is the only supported iPad with the original 9.7-inch display and 2 GB of RAM.

iPads with anA10[c] orA10X[d]SoC have limited support.

iPads with anA12,[e]A13,[f]A14[g] orA15[h] SoC have partial[clarification needed] support.[i]

iPads with anA12X,[j] orA12Z[k] have almost full support.[l]

iPads with anM1,[m]M2[n] orM4[o] SoC have full support.
