Sir Huw Jeremy Wyndham ThomasKCVO FRCP (born 25 February 1958) is a Britishgastroenterologist atSt Mary's Hospital, London, and professor of Gastrointestinal Genetics atImperial College London andSt Mark's Hospital.
In 2005 he was appointed physician to theRoyal Household and in July 2014, head of theMedical Household, the medical section of the Royal Household of the British monarch, andPhysician to the Queen. Thomas was appointedKnight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) in the2021 New Year Honours.
Huw Thomas was born on 25 February 1958 inLondon, England.[1] He was educated atHarrow School.[1] He studied natural sciences atTrinity College, Cambridge, graduating with aBachelor of Arts (BA) degree in 1979: following tradition, his BA was promoted to aMaster of Arts (MA Cantab) degree. He then undertook further studies in medicine at theLondon Hospital Medical College, completing hisBachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree in 1982.[1] He later undertookpostgraduate research at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund and completed aDoctor of Philosophy (PhD) on molecular genetics of colorectal cancer in 1991 atUniversity College London.[1][2]
In 1994 Thomas was appointed consultant physician at St Mary's Hospital, London, and director of the Family Cancer Clinic atSt Mark's Hospital, London.[2] In 2007, he became professor of Gastrointestinal Genetics atImperial College, London.[2]
He ison the staff atKing Edward VII's Hospital.[3] In 2005 he was appointed physician to the Royal Household and in July 2014, head of theMedical Household, the medical section of theRoyal Household of the British monarch, andPhysician to the Queen.[4] Thomas was appointedKnight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) in the2021 New Year Honours.[5][4]
