The population of the civil parish taken at the2011 census was 114.[1] It washistorically located in theNorth Riding of Yorkshire but along with the rest of the formerStartforth Rural District it was transferred toCounty Durham foradministrative andceremonial purposes on 1 April 1974, under the provisions of theLocal Government Act 1972.[2]Gok Wan, the Britishfashion consultant, author and television presenter ofBritish Chinese heritage is a resident of Hunderthwaite.[citation needed] Etymologically speaking, Hunderthwaite is derived most plausibly fromOld NorseHunrothr-þveit, meaning 'Hunrothr's clearing'.[3] The first element in the name could also beOld Englishhundred, a type of administrative division.
