Hugo Filipe da Costa Oliveira (born 25 July 1988), known asHugo Vieira, is a Portuguese former professionalfootballer who played as aforward.
He had four spells withGil Vicente, winning theSegunda Liga in2011, and represented that team andBraga in thePrimeira Liga. Additionally, he played in eight foreign countries, providing a key role inRed Star'sSerbian SuperLiga conquest in2016.
Born inBarcelos, Hugo Vieira made his debut as a senior withFC Girondins de Bordeaux's reserve team, after finishing his development withSanta Maria FC. In July 2007, he was loaned toG.D. Estoril Praia,[2][3] but made no appearances for the side.
In 2009, Hugo Vieira signed forGil Vicente F.C. in theSegunda Liga, helping achieve promotion to thePrimeira Liga as champions at the end of the2010–11 season. On 22 March 2012, he scored to open their 2–2 draw withS.C. Braga at theEstádio Cidade de Barcelos inthe semi-finals of theTaça da Liga, eventually won in apenalty shootout.[4]
Hugo Vieira agreed to a four-year deal withS.L. Benfica on 18 May 2012.[5] On 28 August, he was loaned to SpanishSegunda División clubSporting de Gijón in aseason-long deal,[6] but after being rarely used he returned to Gil on 22 January 2013, being loaned until June.[7]
On 23 August 2013, Hugo Vieira moved to Braga after agreeing to a four-year contract,[8] but started only once over the course of thetop-flight campaign. He returned to Gil Vicente for a third spell the following 30 January, on a temporary basis.[9]
On 1 September 2014, Hugo Vieira joinedFC Torpedo Moscow, newly promoted to theRussian Premier League.[10] On his debut thirteen days later, he replacedKirill Kombarov at the hour-mark and scored a consolation in a 3–1 defeat atFC Spartak Moscow.[11]
Ina season troubled by the death of his partner Edina Carvalho from cancer in January 2015, Hugo Vieira did not find the net again until the penultimate game, when his twopenalties helped to a 3–1 win overFC Ural Sverdlovsk Oblast at theEduard Streltsov Stadium.[12] The team would eventually suffer a double relegation.
On 30 June 2015, Hugo Vieira signed a two-year deal withRed Star Belgrade.[13] On 12 September, he scored twice in the 3–1Eternal Derby home victory overFK Partizan, and later said he had dedicated it to Carvalho.[14] He netted a brace againstFK Čukarički on 6 December (7–2 away triumph)[15] and ahat-trick to help beatFK Radnik Surdulica six days later (5–0, home),[16] as thecapital team went on towin a 27th title; the national footballers' union voted him player of the season,[17] and he was a contender for top scorer until missing the final game againstFK Radnički Niš, in which his teammateAleksandar Katai overtook him to 21 goals.[18]
On 7 January 2017, Hugo Vieira moved to the fifth foreign country of his career, signing forYokohama F. Marinos in Japan;[19]David Babunski made the same move from Red Star days later.[20] He made his debut in theJ1 League as a late substitute on 25 February, scoring the equaliser in a 3–2 home defeat ofUrawa Red Diamonds inthe season opener.[21] In his first year in theFar East, his team came runners-up in theEmperor's Cup, with him finishing a hat-trick at the end of extra time to bestSanfrecce Hiroshima 3–2 in the fourth round on 20 September.[22]
While Yokohama finished in the bottom half of the2018 J1 League, Hugo Vieira was in the top ten goalscorers with 13. This included a hat-trick in a 4–4 draw withShonan Bellmare at theNissan Stadium on 21 April.[23]
Hugo Vieira returned to European football in January 2019, signing an 18-month deal withSivasspor in Turkey.[24] Before making an appearance, he suffered an injury to his left knee and required surgery, ending his involvement for the season.[25]
On 31 October 2019, Hugo Vieira finally made the first of only two appearances for the side fromSivas, coming on in the 59th minute forAbdou Razack Traoré and scoring the last goal of a 6–0 win away toBaşkent Akademi FK in thefourth round of thedomestic cup.[26]
On 28 January 2020, after over five years abroad, Hugo Vieira returned to Portugal's top division and Gil Vicente.[27] Despite signing a new one-year contract in August,[28] he terminated it on 6 October.[29]
Hugo Vieira returned to Japan's top flight withHokkaido Consadole Sapporo on 29 October 2020.[30] After playing three games in what remained ofthe season, he was released.[31]
On 7 July 2021, Hugo Vieira signed a one-year deal withFC U Craiova 1948 of the RomanianLiga I, with the option of a further season.[32] Nineteen days later, in his second game, he scored the only goal of a home victory overFC Dinamo București.[33] On 7 January 2022, his contract was unilaterally terminated by the club.[34]
On 31 January 2022, Hugo Vieira joinedHibernians F.C. of theMaltese Premier League until 30 June.[35] In July 2023, the 35-year-old returned to Portugal and Santa Maria.[36]
