Hugo Edgar Maxwell Blick (born 7 December 1964) is a British filmmaker and actor.[1][2][3] He has his own production company, calledEight Rooks.[4]
Hugo Blick studied in Cardiff at theRoyal Welsh College of Music and Drama.[5]
He has acted in several films, including appearing as ayoung Jack Napier, the character who would ultimately becomeThe Joker, inTim Burton'sBatman. He delivers the famous line "Have you ever danced with the devil by the pale moon light?" after having killed the youngBruce Wayne's parents.[6]
He also co-wrote along with Simon Petter the TV seriesThe Last Word Monologues, a series of three shorts featuringSheila Hancock,Rhys Ifans andBob Hoskins. He has also had producer credits on several works includingRoger & Val Have Just Got In starringDawn French andAlfred Molina.
As a writer he co-created, produced and co-directed along with Simon Petter the TV comediesMarion and Geoff withRob Brydon,Operation Good Guys in which he also appeared as 'Smiler' McCarthy and wrote and created the noir thrillerThe Shadow Line (2011) for theBBC, which starredChiwetel Ejiofor andChristopher Eccleston.[7][8]
In 2014, Hugo Blick wrote and directed theBBC drama seriesThe Honourable Woman, which won aPeabody Award andGolden Globe Award.[9][10] In 2017, it was announced that Blick would write and directBlack Earth Rising forBBC Two andNetflix.[11][12] In 2021, it was announced that Blick would directThe English, a western withEmily Blunt, which he also wrote, forBBC Two andAmazon Prime Video. The series debuted on 10 November 2022, on BBC Two.[13]
Filming took place in August 2025 on his projectCalifornia Avenue, a television series starringBill Nighy,Erin Doherty, andHelena Bonham Carter.[14][15]
