Hughes Lake is asag pond on theSan Andreas Fault in the northernSierra Pelona Mountains, inLos Angeles County, California.[2] At times the lake goes completely dry for years, as its water supply depends on local winter rain and snowmelt. NeighboringElizabeth Lake also has a history of going dry and refilling.[3]
Referred to before 1924 asWest Elizabeth Lake, Lake Hughes is one of a series ofsag ponds in the foothills of the Sierra Pelona Mountains, includingElizabeth Lake, andMunz Lakes, all created by the active motion oftectonic plates on the San Andreas Fault.[4] They are part of the northern upperSanta Clara River watershed.[5]
The lake, at 3,192 ft (973 m) in elevation, is within theAngeles National Forest.
The community ofLake Hughes, anunincorporated community, began settlement in the area around 1873.[6]
