Hugh of Jabala

Hugh was the bishop ofJabala, or, as it was then called,Gibellum, a town inSyria, during the 12th century. When theCounty of Edessa fell toZengi in 1144,Raymond of Antioch sent Hugh to report the news toPope Eugene III.[1] In response, Eugene issued thepapal bullQuantum praedecessores the following year calling for theSecond Crusade. Hugh also told the historianOtto of Freising aboutPrester John, the mythicalNestorian Christian priest-king ofIndia, who was intending to help the Crusader States against the Saracens.[1][2] Otto included the story in hisChronicon of 1145; it is the first recorded mention of the Prester John legend.[1]
