British archdeacon

Hugh Ross NortonOBE (bornMarylebone, 3 April 1890 – diedBury St Edmunds, 10 January 1969) wasArchdeacon of Sudbury[1] from 1945 to 1962.

Norton was educated atMonkton Combe School andWadham College, Oxford. He wasordained in 1914[2] and servedcuracies inWhitechapel,Stepney andTottenham;[3] also acting as awartimeChaplain to theForces in theMiddle East. He wasPrecentor ofWakefield Cathedral from 1921 to 1924; and again aChaplain to theForces from 1924 until 1945[4] when he took up hisArchdeacon’s appointment. He was Rector ofHorringer from 1945 to 1958; and then aCanon Residentiary ofSt Edmundsbury Cathedral from 1958 until 1964: there is a memorial to him in the cathedral. He was Archdeacon Emeritus of Sudbury from 1962 until his death.
