While still an actor in the early 1960s, he had actually been suggested for the leading role inDoctor Who by his friend, the producerRex Tucker, but this was vetoed by incoming series producerVerity Lambert who considered the actor too young for the role. David later stated that as he had recently starred in theGranada Television seriesKnight Errant and disliked the high public profile it brought him, he would not have been keen to take on another leading role anyway.
