
Hugh Bellot (1542 – 1596) was an Englishprelate during theTudor period, who served asbishop of Bangor and thenbishop of Chester.
Dr Bellot assistedWilliam Morgan in hisWelsh-languagetranslation ofthe Bible.
Bellot graduatedB.A. fromChrist's College, Cambridge, in 1564, proceedingM.A. before election as afellow ofJesus College, Cambridge in 1567,[2] later receiving thedegree ofD.D.
The third of ten sons of Thomas Bellot,lord of the manor ofMoreton Magna,Cheshire by his wife Alice Roydon, aWelsh-speaker fromDenbighshire, reputedly he was amisogynist.[3]
A younger brother, Cuthbert Bellot, becameArchdeacon of Chester, whilst he also helped secure an advantageous marriage for his nephew, Edward Bellot withAmy Grosvenor, whose grandson was created abaronet.[4]
Bellot wasconsecrated asbishop of Bangor in 1585,[5] and wastranslated in 1595 to thesee of Chester.[6] He died at Whitsuntide the following year at theBishop's Palace,Chester being buried atBersham,Denbighshire (nowClwyd).[7]
