Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar (Marathi pronunciation:[ɦɾud̪əjnaːt̪ʰ məŋɡeːʃkəɾ]; born 26 October 1937) is an Indian music director and occasional singer. He is the only son of musicianDeenanath Mangeshkar and younger brother ofLata Mangeshkar andAsha Bhosle.[1] He is popularly known asBalasaheb in the music and film industry. He ReceivedFilmfare Marathi Lifetime Achievement Award For His Contribution in Marathi Cinema.[2]
Hridaynath debuted his music career in 1955 with theMarathi filmAkash Ganga. Since then, he has composed for various Marathi films such asSansar,Chaani, Ha Khel Savalyancha, Janaki,Jait Re Jait,Umbartha andNivdung and a fewBollywood films; the most notable among them beingSubah,Lekin... andMaya Memsaab.[3]
He has been very selective with his work. He has composed songs inMarathi andHindi. His songs often have complex meters and require singers of great range and depth for enjoyable renditions. His composition ofVinayak Damodar Savarkar's poemSaagara Pran Talamalala is a case in point. His 1982 albumDnyaneshwar Mauli, featuring compositions fromJñāneśvar, one of the most famous poets inMarathi literature, set the standard for modern devotional music in Marathi.[4]
He also composed music for Doordarshan musical dramaPhoolwanti.
He has also composed folk songs. Staying true to the spirit, hisKoli Geets (fishermen songs) reflect the traditional rhythms of the fishermen ofKonkan. His music to the critically acclaimed movieJait Re Jait is another example of his prowess in this genre. One of his most popular works is the composition for the Marathi filmNivdung.[citation needed]
At one point, Hridaynath was a student ofUstad Amir Khan; however, he feels that his guru is not as timeless as his sister Lata.[5]
He has been the recipient of several awards throughout his career, such as the prestigiousNational Award at the hands of thePresident of India, theLata Mangeshkar Award of Maharashtra state, and seven Maharashtra State Awards for Best Vocalist and Music Director/Composer.
He was awarded the titlepandit by the people of Maharashtra at the hands ofBhimsen Joshi andJasraj. TheShankaracharya has conferred upon him the titleBhaav Gandharva.
He was awardedPadma Shri by theGovernment of India in 2009.
Some of his most memorable Hindi film scores areHarishchandra Taramati,Prarthana,Chakra,Lekin...,Maya Memsaab,Lal Salaam,Yash Chopra'sMashaal,Dhanwan andChaani, to name a few.
He is also the first Indian composer to compose and release two entire albums featuring the poems and songs of the poet-saintMeera, titledChala Vahi Des andMeera Bhajans. He has recently also composed and released an album titledMeera Soor Kabeera, featuring the works of Meera,Kabir andSurdas. He produced an album featuring theghazals ofGhalib, titledGhalib and sung byLata Mangeshkar. His collaborations with noted Marathi poets such as Shanta Shelke and Suresh Bhat have produced many Marathi classic songs of unmatched popularity.[6]
He joined the political partyShiv Sena in 2009.[7]
