Howie Weinberg is an American audiomastering engineer. Over the course of his career, he has received over 2,257 mastering credits,[1] threeTEC Awards,[2] 21Grammy Awards,[3] twoJuno Awards,[4][5][6] and oneMercury Prize.

Career

Weinberg masteredHerbie Hancock's 1983 albumFuture Shock.[7] Other mastering works include theBeastie Boys'Licensed to Ill andNirvana'sNevermind.[8]

Weinberg began working in the mail room atMasterdisk in 1977,[9] delivering recording tapes inNew York City. Mastering engineerBob Ludwig acted as his mentor. In January 2011, he left Masterdisk to set up his own mastering company in Los Angeles, Howie Weinberg Mastering, which appeared inVoyage LA's "Most Inspiring Stories" on February 11, 2021.[10]

In 1982, Weinberg worked on thePayolas' song "Eyes of a Stranger".[6][11] In 1997,Polythene byFeeder was met with critical acclaim and made the UK Top 75.[12]

He appeared on a panel discussion at the 2009SXSW music festival titled Producers "On Making Classic Records" sometimes working in a teaching capacity.[13]

In 2020, Weinberg began consulting with LANDR, an online, cloud-based, automated mastering service developed by MixGenius in Montreal, Quebec. The service digitally masters uploaded audio tracks using artificial intelligence algorithms.[14][15]

Awards and nominations

Weinberg was nominated for the Mix Foundation'sTEC Awards (Technical Excellence & Creativity) for mastering engineer in 1997.[16] He was named among the winners for Outstanding Creative Achievement in 2003 as part of the team for Sheryl Crow's "Soak Up the Sun" andC'mon, C'mon,[17] the album also earned twoTEC Awards.[2] In 2006, for Record Production as part of the team forGorillaz's "Feel Good Inc".[18] In 2001, he received aMercury Prize for masteringPJ Harvey's albumStories from the City, Stories from the Sea.[19]

In 2017 his work on Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was inducted into theGrammy Hall of Fame.[20] That year, he also won aJuno Awards of 2017 forThe Strumbellas.[21][22]

Personal life

Weinberg married Rachel Felder, the director of artists and repertory atColumbia Records, in July 1999.[69]

Weinberg's brother Marty (died Oct. 2018)[70] was one of the firstGrateful Dead fans who recorded and distributed the band's shows.[71]
