Homity pie is a traditionalBritish openvegetablepie. Thepastry case contains a filling ofpotatoes and anonion andleek mixture, which is then covered withcheese.[1]
There is little known on the exact history of the dish. It is sometimes called 'Devon Pie', deriving from the belief that it is an English country recipe originating fromDevon. Its origins are also claimed to date back to theWomen's Land Army of theSecond World War and the restrictions imposed by wartimerationing.[2] What is known however is that the dish's mainstream popularity came fromCranks Vegetarian Restaurant, which opened inLondon in 1961, whenvegetarianism gained support from thehippie subculture.[3]
