Homburg (German pronunciation:[ˈhɔmbʊʁk];French:Hombourg,[ɔ̃buʁ];Palatine German:Humborch) is a town inSaarland,Germany and the administrative seat of theSaarpfalz district. With a population of 43,029 inhabitants (2022),[3] it is the third largest town in the state. The city offers over 30,000 workplaces. The medical department of theUniversity of Saarland is situated here. The city is also home to theKarlsberg beer brewery. Major employers includeRobert Bosch GmbH,Schaeffler Group andMichelin.

Geography

Homburg is located in the northern part of theSaarpfalz district, borderingRhineland-Palatinate. It is 16 km fromNeunkirchen and 36 km fromSaarbrücken.

The city districts are situated in theBlies valley or on its tributariesErbach,Lambsbach andSchwarzbach.

Homburg is composed of Homburg center and nine city districts:Beeden,Bruchhof-Sanddorf,Einöd,Erbach,Jägersburg,Kirrberg,Reiskirchen,Schwarzenbach andWörschweiler.

Einöd includes: Einöd, Ingweiler and Schwarzenacker; Jägersburg includes Jägersburg, Altbreitenfelderhof and Websweiler; Erbach includes Erbach, Lappentascherhof and Johannishof.

Hohenburg Castle, nowadays a ruin, was the seat of the counts of Homburg in the 12th century. In 1330 the village received town status (Stadtrecht) fromLouis the Bavarian.

Since the administration reform 1974 Homburg has a Lord Mayor, before that it used to have a Mayor.[4]

Rüdiger Schneidewind (SPD) has been Lord Mayor of Homburg since October 1, 2014.
