Holger Thiele (September 25, 1878 – June 5, 1946) was aDanish Americanastronomer anddiscoverer of minor planets andcomets.[2]
He was the son ofThorvald Nicolai Thiele (1838–1910), the notedDanish astronomer, actuary and mathematician, after whom themain-belt asteroid1586 Thiele is named.[3]
Holger Thiele is credited by theMinor Planet Center with the discovery of 4 numberedasteroids during 1914–1916.[1] He also discovered the cometC/1906 V1 and calculated the orbits of other comets. He worked atHamburg-Bergedorf Observatory atBergedorf, inHamburg, Germany. In 1912, he immigrated to theUnited States.[4]
In 1917, he started working as a fellow for theUniversity of California atLick Observatory, nearSan Jose, California. Holger Thiele died inAlameda County in 1946.[5]
