Holding Liat is a 2025 Americandocumentary film, directed by Brandon Kramer. It followsLiat Beinin Atzili as she and her husband are kidnapped from herkibbutz on theOctober 7 attacks. The film was produced byDarren Aronofsky under hisProtozoa Pictures banner, and had its world premiere at the75th Berlin International Film Festival on February 16, 2025, where it won the Berlinale Documentary Film Award.

Premise

Liat Beinin Atzili and her husband, Aviv Atzili, are kidnapped from herkibbutz on theOctober 7 attacks, with Atzili ultimately killed. Her parents Yehuda and Chaya Beinin deal with the fear amongst waiting her fate, along with Liat's uncleJoel Beinin.[4]

Production

Brandon Kramer, a distant relative, began documenting following the kidnapping of Liat Beinin Atzili, as her father Yehuda Beinin traveled to the United States to advocate for her release.[5] Production additionally took place in Israel, as Beinin reached out to more people to help, expressing disdain for the Israeli government.[6][7]

Release

The film had its World Premiere at the75th Berlin International Film Festival on February 16, 2025, where it won the Berlinale Documentary Film Award.[8][9] Soon after, it had its North American Premiere atTribeca Festival on June 9, 2025.[10][11]

The film was first released theatrically in the United Kingdom on September 12, 2025, and is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States in January 2026, beginning with New York'sFilm Forum.[12][13][14]
