Hlegu Township (Burmese:လှည်းကူး မြို့နယ်,pronounced[l̥ɛ́ɡúmjo̰nɛ̀]) is the onlytownship inHlegu District (Burmese:လှည်းကူးခရိုင်) in northernYangon Region,Myanmar. It is northeast of the cityYangon and is largely rural. The township only has one town: the principal town ofHlegu, which has five urban wards. The rural portion of the township contains 168 villages grouped into 57village tracts.[1] In April 2022, the township was promoted to become its own district, splitting off fromNorth Yangon District.[2][3]
The township'sPaunglin Dam andNgamoeyeik Reservoir supply water to over 28,300 hectares (70,000 acres) of farmland between Hlegu and Mingaladon, and nearly 340 million liters (90 million gallons) of water a day to the people living in Yangon.[4] The township is prone to flooding from the Ngamoeyeik River andBago River. In 2014, floods affected 3000 people in the villages of Ngwenanthar, Malit, Sinhpon, Sitpinmyauk and Yaekyaw villages. Blockages in drainage systems also caused severe flooding in Tadagyi village in rural Hlegu Towsnhip.[5]
The newYangon–Mandalay Expressway cuts through the township.[6]
Hlegu township shares borders withHmawbi Township andTaikkyi Township in the west,Bago Township ofBago Region in the north and east,North Okkalapa Township,North Dagon Township andEast Dagon Township in the south.[7]
