The Hildesheim Forest is located in theInnerste Uplands, part of theLower Saxon Hills, between the valleys of theLeine to the west, theInnerste to the north and theLamme to the east. These densely forested hills, which are bordered to the east by theSauberge and lie a few kilometres west-southwest of theVorholz, fill an area south ofHildesheim, northwest ofBad Salzdetfurth, north ofSibbesse and southeast ofNordstemmen.

Description

[edit]

The Hildesheim Forest, which attain a height of 359 m in theGriesberg, are crossed by numerouswaterways, hiking trails and forest tracks, but only by one state road, theL 485, which links Hildesheim via Diekholzen to Sibbesse. In its northwestern part is theBeusterburg, whosecircular ramparts are suggestive of aNew Stone Age settlement. In the vicinity of the village of Betheln there is aBronze Age burial site (Hügelgräberfeld). Further away from the village there is also a number of brine springs. At the northern end of the Hildesheim Forest is theHeyersum Saltworks (Saline Heyersum). In addition there is atransmission tower on the Griesberg and severalobservation towers.

A section of theHanover–Würzburg high-speed railway runs through the Hildesheim Forest through three tunnels (see the section on ‘hills’), over bridges and on stretches of open line.
