Hierapolis /ˌhaɪəˈræpəlɪs/ (Ancient Greek:ΙεράπολιςIerapolis) orHieropolis (Ιερόπολις)[1] was a town of thePhrygian Pentapolis inancient Phrygia, inhabited duringRoman andByzantine times.[2] Its bishop in the late 2nd century AD wasAbercius, the subject ofa famous inscription.[3]
