Hesperaloe (false yucca)[2] is a genus offlowering plants in thefamilyAsparagaceae, subfamilyAgavoideae.[1] It containsperennialyucca-like plants with long, narrow leaves produced in a basal rosette and flowers borne on longpanicles orracemes. The species are native to the arid parts ofTexas in theUnited States andMexico and are sometimes cultivated asxerophytic ornamental plants.[3]
The genus name is derived from theGreek word έσπερος (hesperos), meaning "western," andaloe, which the plants resemble.[4] The genus is not closely related toAloe, the later belonging to a different family (Asphodelaceae).
