Herwig Maehler,FBA (29 April 1935 – 29 October 2021) was a German historian andpapyrologist, who specialized inclassics and ancient history.
He completed his PhD at theUniversity of Hamburg in 1961.[1] In 1975, he completed hisHabilitation in classics from theFree University of Berlin.[1]
He subsequently worked as a curator of Greekpapyri atEgyptian Museum of Berlin. Afterwards he was Professor of Papyrology atUniversity College London.[2]
He was a fellow of theBritish Academy.[3]
