Herrington is an area in the south ofSunderland, inTyne and Wear, England,historically inCounty Durham.

The Herringtons are split intoEast & Middle andWest andNew villages. East and Middle Herrington is now a largely residential area just off theA690. West and New Herrington are across theA19 road from East and Middle Herrington nearDoxford International Business Park.

Herrington Country Park

In the 19th century, theDurham Coalfield began to take shape, and a number ofcollieries were established in the area, including one in New Herrington. Today, the former colliery site is the Herrington Country Park which plays host to the Durham County Show and the North East Motor Show. On 7 and 8 May 2005,Radio 1's Big Weekend was staged on the Herrington Country Park site. Notable artists who performed that year includeFoo Fighters,Kasabian andThe Black Eyed Peas. On 16 June 2012, theOlympic Torch came through the park andBlue Peter came live from the event.

The now defunctfootball club Herrington Swifts were in existence in the early 20th century.Jack Middlemas, who played over 200 league games forYork City, began his career with Swifts, as didJames Bewick andStanley Cowie.

History

On 1 April 1946 Herrington became acivil parish, being formed fromEast and Middle Herrington,West Herrington andSilksworth, on 1 April 1967 the parish was abolished and merged with Sunderland andHoughton-le-Spring.[1] In 1961 the parish had a population of 2153.[2]
