Herb Jaffe (May 20, 1921-December 7, 1991) was anindependentfilm producer in theUnited States.
Jaffe was born inBrooklyn,New York, and began his career as aliterary agent,[1] working withauthors such asReginald Rose[1] (Twelve Angry Men, 1954),Joseph Heller[1] (Catch-22, 1961,Something Happened, 1974), andPhilip Roth[1] (Goodbye, Columbus, 1959,Portnoy's Complaint, 1969,American Pastoral, 1997, andThe Human Stain, 2001). He then took a position atUnited Artists,[2] eventually becoming the studio's head of worldwide production.[1]
Having become anindependent producer in 1973,[2] he producedThe Wind and the Lion (1975), starringSean Connery, and 11 other films, includingWho'll Stop the Rain withNick Nolte,Jinxed! withBette Midler,The Demon Seed withJulie Christie, andTime After Time andFright Night Part 2 withJulie Carmen. He also executive produced four films, including Those Lips, Those Eyes, andMotel Hell.
In the 1980s, he was head ofThe Vista Organization (a.k.a.Vista Films). During this time, he also set up Vista Films' home video branches, as well as distribution arm, New Century/Vista Film Co., a joint venture withNew Century Entertainment.[3][4]
Jaffe died of cancer at the age of 70 inBeverly Hills, California.[1]
His son,Steven-Charles Jaffe, is also a producer, whose credits include titles such asDemon Seed andTime After Time. His other sons includeDJ Jaffe andRobert Jaffe, who is an actor, writer and producer.
