Henry George Percy, 7th Duke of Northumberland,KG PC FRS (29 May 1846 – 14 May 1918), styledLord Warkworth between 1865 and 1867 andEarl Percy between 1867 and 1899, was a BritishConservative politician. He served asTreasurer of the Household underBenjamin Disraeli between 1874 and 1875 and wasChairman of the National Union of Conservative and Constitutional Associations from 1879 to 1883.
Percy was the eldest son ofAlgernon Percy, 6th Duke of Northumberland, by his wife Louisa, daughter ofHenry Drummond.Lord Algernon Percy was his younger brother. He became known by thecourtesy title Lord Warkworth when his grandfather succeeded in the dukedom of Northumberland in 1865 and as Earl Percy when his father succeeded in the dukedom in 1867.
Percy was returned to parliament forNorthumberland North in 1868.[1] In 1874 he was sworn of thePrivy Council[2] and appointedTreasurer of the Household underBenjamin Disraeli,[3] a post he held until 1875.[4] From 1879 to 1883 he wasChairman of the National Union of Conservative and Constitutional Associations.[citation needed] The Northumberland North seat was abolished in 1885 and Percy was not elected for another constituency.[1] Two years later he was summoned to theHouse of Lords through awrit of acceleration in his father's barony of Lovaine.[5]
From 1909 he was made analderman onMiddlesex County Council.[6]
Percy succeeded in the dukedom in 1899 upon his father's death and was made aKnight of the Garter the same year.[7] He later served asLord Lieutenant of Northumberland from 1904[8] until his death in 1918[9] and wasLord High Steward atKingGeorge V'scoronation in 1911, where he boreSt Edward's Crown.[10] He was President of the Board of Governors ofDurham University College of Science (in Newcastle) in 1902,[11] and from 1913 he also served as the secondChancellor of theUniversity of Durham.[citation needed]
He was president of theGuildford Agricultural Association from 1902.[12]
He washonorary colonel of the2nd Northumberland (Percy) Artillery Volunteers until it was disbanded in October 1902.[13]
Northumberland married Lady Edith Campbell, daughter ofGeorge Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll, on 23 December 1868. They had 13 children:
The Duchess of Northumberland died in July 1913, aged 63. Northumberland survived her by five years and died in May 1918, aged 71.
