Henry Crowe (14 March 1769 – 18 December 1851)[1] was an EnglishAnglican clergyman and earlyanimal rights writer.

Biography

Henry Crowe was born atStoke Ferry, Norfolk,[2] the son of the Rev. Henry Crowe, Rector ofBurnham Deepdale.[3] After schooling inNorwich, hematriculated atGonville and Caius College, Cambridge in 1786, graduatingB.A. in 1790.[3] He was a Fellow ofClare College (1793–1800) and obtained hisM.A. in 1794.[2]

Crowe was ordaineddeacon on 5 December 1791 andpriest on 26 May 1793. He was vicar ofBuckingham (1810–1851).[2] He died atHatton Garden in 1851, age 82.[2]

Zoophilos

Crowe was the author of the bookZoophilos, published in 1819. It was an early work supportive ofanimal welfare and criticised the mistreatment of animals such asbullbaiting,cockfighting, andbearbaiting.[4] He also criticised methods ofanimal slaughter and types of animal experimentation and testing.[5] Croweopposed vivisection and his book contains the chapter, "On Cruelty in Philosophical Researches" which compares vivisectional cruelties to theinquisition.[6][7] He was an opponent offield sports, especiallyhunting.[8]

There were positive reviews of Crowe's book published inThe Gentleman's Magazine (1819) andThe Monthly Review (1820).[9][10]
