Synonyms

Spironematellidae (previously known as Spironemidae)[1] is afamily ofheterotrophicflagellates, in the groupHemimastigophora. They vary in size and shape from theellipsoidHemimastix amphikineta (14 × 7 μm) to thevermiformSpironematella terricola (43 × 3 μm), and are united by the possession of two rows ofcilia, calledkineties.[2]

Phylogenomic analysis shows that Hemimastigophora are a distinct and ancient lineage ofeukaryotic organisms, forming a possible sisterclade to the supergroupDiaphoretickes.[3][4]
